Two lawyers from the Akron-Canton firm of Tzangas, Plakas Mannos & Raies, Ltd consider their honor with Super Lawyers especially significant because they have worked hard in business litigation.

Managing Partner Lee Plakas, and Partner Gary Corroto, have been recognized among Ohio’s premier corporate counselors by Super Lawyers Magazine–Business Edition.

They were each selected for their expertise in business litigation and both attorneys have had recent success in cases where millions of dollars were at stake.

Plakas has also received the prestigious recognition of being named one of the Top 100 attorneys in Ohio and in Best Lawyers in America. Corroto was rated among the top five percent of attorneys in Ohio.

He said it is an honor to be recognized by the business edition, specifically, because his journey into business litigation is an interesting one.

In the first half of his 35-year career in litigation, he was primarily representing individuals against businesses and institutions in wrongful death, malpractice and personal injury cases.

Although a significant portion of his practice is still representing individuals in those types of cases, in the last 15 years, business and institutions that Plakas once litigated against are now seeking his representation in their own business litigation matters.

He has been involved in more than a 100 jury trials, including a 9-week jury trial last summer where he represented one area hospital against another. It resulted in his client’s favor for more than $10 million and a finding that the other hospital had engaged in a pattern of corrupt business activities.

Plakas said he believes that the trial techniques and creativity that fostered success against large defendants in his early years have served him well when he represents businesses in litigation against other businesses.

His experience has enabled him to win cases involving millions of dollars in an unusually wide spectrum of cases, ranging from business unfair competition, breach of contract, business fraud, employment harassment, unsafe workplace, medical malpractice, nursing home negligence and sports law litigation.

Born and raised in the Akron area and a graduate of The University of Akron School of Law, Plakas has been previously recognized by Super Lawyers as one of the Top 100 attorneys in the state of Ohio in 2010 and 2011. The American Trial Lawyers Association has also named him as one of Ohio’s Top 100 Trial Attorneys in 2010 and 2011.

Corroto said he is also very honored to be recognized by Super Lawyers–Business Edition, specifically for his litigation work on behalf of businesses, large and small, located throughout Ohio and the Midwest.

“This honor is particularly satisfying because it is based upon nominations and evaluations by my peers,” he said.

“The work that we do at Tzangas, Plakas, Mannos & Raies is a true team effort and I would like to thank my partners, our associates and support staff for their hard work which is the hallmark of the success of our firm.

“We all look forward to continuing to provide the very best legal services to our clients.”

His recent cases include obtaining a $2.1 million verdict on behalf of their client in a contract dispute between two McDonald’s fast-food restaurant franchisees, securing dismissal on behalf of clients of a consumer class action where damages in excess of $5 million were being sought, obtaining a $450,000 settlement for a public figure client in a defamation suit, obtaining a confidential damages settlement on behalf of a national consumer product marketer and distributor in a trademark infringement case and obtaining a confidential damages settlement on behalf of the nation’s largest privately owned medical supply distributor against a Fortune 100 company for deceptive trade practices.

Corroto, who also graduated from The University of Akron School of Law, has been a partner in the firm since 2003.
