Technology for Lawyers

Here are a few things that you may be interested in, none of which would fill an entire column:

Another secure flash drive company has chanced upon my path, this one from Kanguru (so, as a Buddhist, I will always give props to any company name with “guru” in it).

Kanguru has supplied secure media to businesses, the military, the legal world, etc. for over 20 years. Their secure flash drives come with remote wipe capabilities, which is now really a must for any remote devices—including phones.

Speaking of phones, Google’s latest search bar upgrade has added a few new phone-dedicated capabilities. If you are signed into your Gmail account on your phone, you can now:

Type “find my phone” in your computer search bar. The popup window that ensues lets you ring your phone from your computer, or, if the phone is gone, will let you wipe the data off of the phone.

You can also do the following tricks through the Google search bar: send a note to your phone by typing “send a note to my phone”; set an alarm by typing “set an alarm”; set a reminder by typing “set a reminder”; and send directions to your phone through Google Maps by typing “send directions” in the search bar.

Must-try apps.

It is now official. Lawyers can conduct virtually their entire office functions through apps. You could give the following a try:

Fastcase, for legal research.

Depose, to organize depositions.

MyCase, Clio, and CaseManager now come in app form.

Google Handwriting Keyboard Input is brand new and worth a look, critics be damned.

Cloudprint is an absolute must-have. Print from your phone or tablet.

MS Office: apps are now available for Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

EFax is still around, and now is an app—fax from your phone.

There are also apps that allow you to control your phone from your computer (Airdroid), or your computer from your phone (Chrome Remote Desktop, Splashtop).

Finally, give your on-off switch a break. Instead of having to press the switch every time you set your phone down and the screen times out, instead download Gravity Switch. Highly recommended to everyone.
