5th Annual Summit for Kids Celebration to be held Aug.1-2

AKRON––The connection between the development of specific early childhood skills and later career success will be the focus at this year’s Summit for Kids Symposium. The symposium will take place at the Akron-Summit County Public Library main branch in Akron on Friday, Aug. 1.

Executive Director Derran K. Wimer and Senior Research Associate Dr. Matthew D. Deevers of the Summit Education Initiative are the keynote speakers and will present “Cradle to Career, Helping Every Child Succeed” to the attendees.

The symposium will have a discussion on strategic asset building activities for all children in the community. Participants will explore methods for achieving parent and child program engagement.

The day-long symposium will give attorneys, accountants, nurses, social workers, teachers, human resource professionals and counselors the opportunity to earn continuing education hours.

The 2014 Summit for Kids Awards luncheon will be held at the John S. Knight Center on Friday, Aug. 1 at noon. The Summit for Kids Awards celebrates partnerships and collaboration in conjunction with the 5th Annual Summit for Kids Community Expo, an event that connects parents and children with community resources. The award committee has reviewed nominations of community and youth groups, nonprofit agencies and organizations, businesses and individual youth who have participated in an outstanding collaborative project, event or activity that helped to improve the lives of children, families and the betterment of the community. The winners will be announced at the luncheon.

This year we will celebrate the 5th Annual Summit for Kids on Sat., Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the John S. Knight Center.

Free featured activities include: immunizations, dental services, back to school physicals, crafts and activities for children, back packs filled with school supplies, educational sessions for parents and meet-and-greet opportunities with Spider-Man and Captain America from Marvel Entertainment, Brobee & Foofa from Yo Gabba Gabba, Paws from the Akron-Summit Public Library, Gilby from Akron Public Schools, Webster from the Akron RubberDucks and much more.

Scheduled entertainment will be provided by the Summit Academy Steel Drum Band, YEPAW Drum Line and Vocal Group, Eternity Irish Dance Troupe, Steel Angels Steel Drum Band, Ronald McDonald’s Magic Show, Sparkle Effect Cheer Squad and Rockin Robots.
